Math and Art

As a math major student, I always feel that math is an art. One of my favorite connections between math and art is origami art pieces. This rose below is an artwork created by Robert J. Lang. His artworks are connected with mathematical concepts such as "polypolyhedra" (Lang).

In Flat Land novel, Abbot mentions that coloring using in paintings is a math problem (27). Similarly, all circles, spheres, and points, shapes commonly used in art, are all related with math. Abbot states that the problems between math and life are closely connected (20). Art comes from life; the strong connection between math and life suggests that math and art are interrelated.

One of my favorite artists is Giorgio de Chirico. Geometry is a charactering component of his artworks. He often draws the city view. In this painting below, these lines create loneliness. Math (the further the distance is, the smaller the windows are) emphases the despair illustrated in the paintings. Furthermore, I feel that the straight line is one of the best ways to depict loneliness. Another distribution of math to art is Golden ratio, where artists use this ratio to reach aesthetic. For example, Leonardo Da Vinci uses golden ratios in "The last supper" (Meisner).

From this week's materials, I learn about more ways that the art connects with math. The artwork below is created with precise calculation. For example, the lights pointed is approximately 4 square meters (artcom). Using math, this creates a 3-D effect. From this week's material, I realized that math, art, science are closely related, and one's existence makes the other two better.
