Week 4

Before this week's lecture, I never thought that there was a connection between art and medical technology. Medical technology helps people to know our body better, such as all the different muscles and bones. As the professor suggested in the introduction video, the manipulation of the human body was very interesting, and one  way that human beings participate in the art culture is through the  connection between anatomy  and art.  My roommate is an art-major student, and one thing she always does is to draw the human body. It is common for art-major students to have a wooden human body shape on their desks. Another connection between anatomy and art is  an art exhibition named "body worlds". It is created by Gunter Von Hagens. He invented a specific technique to represent the human's body. Personally, I do not enjoy his artworks very much, because I feel that what is under the human beings' skin is not very aesthetically pleasing. St...

Event and Artworks

Image
The event which I went to is  Sarah Brady's graduate solo show. The above is a brief introduction to the background of her art pieces. Below is one of her artworks, and it is my favorite one. The picture is only a quarter of the art piece. This art piece constantly moves due to the effect of sounds. It definitely is an art piece related to technology. When I first saw it, I was confused and do not know what message this art piece delivers. However, after staring at it for several minutes, I kind of got the meaning. First, it constantly changes its form. The form in this very second is different from the form in the very last second. It is the same as how the world works: everything changes constantly. As the picture states above, the main theme of this exhibition is the disintegration. As the object moves, the metals in the middle move toward the sides. At the end of the time, there will be nothing left in the center. If the fact that the object stayed in the center ...

Week 3

The Robotics and Art  Technology  and art are often related. For example, iPhone undeniably is an art piece. When its designer spent several years on a product, it is hard to deny its beauty. Technology often creates arts. For example, one of the art projects exhibited in the Modern Museum is created by projectors. The first one is an artwork created by projectors. Photography is a form of art. People often use technology to photoshop their photographs for better effects. For example, the lighting might be bad for night view photographs. However, photoshop can avoid this problem and create better artworks.  https://www.pinterest.com/explore/video-installation/ https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/10-essential-tips-night-photography Micromagic Systems' Robotics Lab (MSRL) allows people to shop for different parts and make the robots by themselves. As a result, people can create their own art pieces.  I like how th...

Math and Art

Image
As a math major student, I always feel that math is an art. One of my favorite connections between math and art is origami art pieces. This rose below is an artwork created by Robert J. Lang. His artworks are connected with mathematical concepts such as "polypolyhedra" (Lang).                                                  (polypolyhedra example)  http://www.langorigami.com/article/polypolyhedra-origami http://www.langorigami.com/artwork/a3-rose-opus-718 In Flat Land novel, Abbot mentions that coloring using in paintings is a math problem (27). Similarly, all circles, spheres, and points, shapes commonly used in art, are all related with math. Abbot states that the problems between math and life are closely connected (20). Art comes from life; the strong connection between math and life suggests that math and art are interrelated. One of my favori...
