Event 3

This Thursday, I went to E. Joteva’s art show named Mnemoawari. This presentation explores the connection between the past and future. This presentation contains many interesting subjects, and I think the main theme of this presentation is matter, the different forms it takes and ways it disappears.

There are three parts of the show. The first part is a blue picture, and the selfie which Joteva and I took is in front of this picture. This image is the brain wave during a dream because the dream connects with the future. The second part is the rather huge balls from flowers and ice. There are three balls, and Joteva created these balls in layer. They are made from flowers, mushroom, sand, ice, and so on. I feel that they are related with the material that I learned from Chemistry. Both melting and vaporization are the processes of changes in matter. The matter does not change, but it takes on different forms. Another rule from Chemistry is that matter cannot be created or destroyed. As these balls are made from ice, eventually they will “disappear” (take another form). This is makes me rethink about the definitions of matter.
Another inspiring idea which I have from this event is that material is a cycle. For example, the ice melts and it becomes water. When the temperature is below certain degrees, the water will become ice again. Furthermore, the flower petals used to create these balls are also cycles, which is like the trees. The tree grows. At a certain time, its leaves fell and provide nutrients for the tree’s future growth.

The third part of the photographs of these balls. Because the ball’s material, the ball in this very second is different from the ball in the next second. For instance, one ball is taken out 40 minutes earlier than the other two. That ball has become shinny under the light while the other two stay matte. The photograph shows the desire to preserve the cycle. In the end, all the three balls will only have water and other materials left. They are no longer in the shapes of sphere.

When I first step into the room and Joteva mentioned nothing lasts, I was confused. But as staring at the balls and seeing the water drop from it, I understand Joteva. It makes me think about my life and the different forms which it can take. The disappearring idea is the same since death is an inescapable fate for all human beings. Different people live their lives differently. People have different life goals and the ways which they approach their goals are different as well. Furthermore, there is photography, which people may use to record their lives.

I recommend this event to other students. Art is inspiring, and it allows people to view the world from other perspectives. Moreover, I feel that these three balls and their pictures are very beautiful.
