Week 7
Through this week's material, I explored the relationship between neuroscience and art. I totally agree with Gregory Bateson's view such that mind is complex, aesthetic, intricate, and elegant. It is an artwork in nature. Artists are interested in how human being's mind works. For example, in my last Desma event, one of the art works shows neurons' activities when people dream. I am always curious about my own dreams and want to interpret them. Artist Henri Rousseau also explores the dream world. In the painting below, the women is sleeping. The lion may appear in her dream, or she may appear in the lion's dream.
This week's material also helps me to explore the definition of consciousness. Consciousness include the conscious of gender, race, country and etc.. I also learned that Franz Joseph was the first person who suggested that different functions to various part of the brain. He thought that the shape of the skull was connected with a person's intelligence and personality. I partially agree with his view because I think some personalities are decided at the moment people born. We all know about the Superhero movies, and I think that amount of selflessness in a Superhero is congenital.
Also, different colors can give people different feelings. For example, most fast-food restaurants use the color red to decorate, because red makes people feel more hungry. Also, I feel the color yellow makes people happy. Furthermore, people create artworks for therapies since they can use art to express themselves and therefore enhancing their self-esteems.

Hi Elena!
ReplyDeleteI really liked that you talked about the art that can be created through neuroscience, specifically through dreams and emotions. I enjoyed the Rousseau picture you included about the lion and the woman. I also thought it was interesting how you talked about the role that art can play in therapy, perhaps for people with mental disorders. All of these examples were great to read after lectures of conceptual brain information. I do want to know how you feel the art this week compares with / differs in relation to the previous weeks of art that we've seen. Do you think this field is controversial, new, innovative?
